Church Street, Branxton
- Project scheduleCompleted September 2022
Background
With the opening of the Hunter Expressway the Branxton CBD returned from being a main regional thoroughfare, to a village centre. Council engaged Moir Landscape Architecture to develop a conceptual design to make the village centre more approachable and secure for pedestrian users, providing more open space and amenity along Maitland Street including tree planting and general street-scaping beautification. The outcome of this conceptual design was the ‘Branxton Town Centre Public Domain Plan and Implementation Plan’.
Council sought, and were successful in obtaining, funding from the State Government, under the Local Roads and Community Infrastructure Program (LRCIP) to complete a small project in the Branxton CBD that aligns with and fulfils the intent of the Branxton Town Centre Public Domain Plan and Implementation Plan, stages 1 and 2 of which have already been completed.
This project forms part of Council's Operational Plan. You can find it within the Operational Plan with the Project ID CTB 2021 001.
Location
This project involves the creation of a shared space along 30m of Church Street, Branxton from its intersection with Maitland Street. The width of the shared space is approximately 8m. The total area of treatment is 240m2. Church Street is a no-through road that services the rear car park for one business and a service area for the other. Traffic through this space is low and infrequent.
The reclamation of this space will have significant enduring benefits for these businesses and provide an intimate public space for public events (markets, exhibitions, music events) and to celebrate the heritage buildings and streetscape. The space will also include much needed bicycle parking infrastructure associated with the Branxton to Greta Memorial Cycleway (to be considered in section two).
Funding
Council has successfully secured funding from the Australian Government - Local Roads and Community Infrastructure Program. A local community developer and Cessnock City Council have also contributed funding to this project to ensure the project budget is sufficient to complete this section of the works.
Scope of Works
The approved scope of works for Stage 1 under the grant includes:
- Concrete/Paved - Shared space, approximately 240m2
- Repair and overlay pavement with seal surface
Stage 1 of the Town Centre upgrade is now complete. These works included construction of a shared zone including kerb and guttering, concrete pavement, associated signage and provisions for future works. The remaining section is to be completed at later date.
