Background

The Bathurst Street Bridge in Abermain is a single-span timber bridge located approximately 300m north of the Shiralee Trail junction, spanning over Deep Creek. Following a Level 3 inspection in January 2024, which identified significant decay in key timber elements—such as decking, girders and piles—the bridge’s load capacity remains limited to 7.0T, due to its deteriorating condition.

Council is currently undertaking the design and investigation phase for Bathurst Street bridge replacement.


Scope of works

The broad scope of works includes:

  • Conduct Road Safety Audit
  • Review of Environmental Factors (REF)
  • Undertake Detailed Survey
  • Geotechnical investigation, and;
  • Develop detailed design

Benefits

The project will increase the bridge from one narrow lane timber bridge to a two-lane concrete bridge. Users will have new line markings, sealed bridge surface and increased load capacity.


Traffic Management

Traffic control and reduced speed limits will be in place as required during the investigate and design phase.


Funding

Cessnock City Council will contribute $80,000 for the design and investigate phase and will apply for grant funding opportunities for the construction phase.
