Unsung hero Alan Playford to share moving memoir ‘Through the Rubble'
Published on 08 August 2025
Kurri Kurri Library will host a special author talk featuring Alan Playford, author of the compelling new memoir ‘Through the Rubble’. Join an evening of profound storytelling and quiet heroism on Tuesday 12 August, form 5.30–6.30pm at Kurri Kurri Library.
Alan Playford's life is a testament to extraordinary service and unwavering courage. He first gained national recognition following the devastating 1989 Newcastle earthquake, where he famously crawled through the rubble of the Workers Club to rescue Norm Duffy – an image that captured headlines worldwide and etched itself into the national consciousness.
Affectionately known as 'Scoop', Alan's impact extended far beyond the immediate aftermath of disaster. He was instrumental in transforming Australia's ambulance service, modernising equipment, and establishing vital helicopter rescue services, fundamentally reshaping paramedicine across the Hunter region and beyond.
Yet, some of his most profound and defining experiences took him far from Australian shores. Alan served on the perilous frontlines of harrowing humanitarian crises in East Timor, the Solomon Islands, and most searingly, Rwanda. His five months in post-genocide Rwanda left an indelible mark, profoundly deepening his understanding of trauma, loss, and the true meaning of service.
Despite battling personal demons and the immense weight of his experiences, Alan remained a pillar of composure during the nation's darkest hours, notably during the destructive 2003 Canberra bushfires. His calm leadership under immense pressure earned him one of Australia's highest civilian honours.
His memoir, 'Through the Rubble,' is a deeply human account of a lifetime of service, exploring themes of bravery, trauma, and resilience, not just his own, but also that of the many medics he worked alongside. It stands as a powerful reminder of the quiet strength and unwavering dedication of those who answer the call in the world's darkest moments.
Library Services Co-ordinator Rose-marie Walters expressed her anticipation for the event.
"We are honoured to host Alan Playford at Kurri Kurri Library," said Ms Walters.
"His remarkable journey is a testament to the human spirit's capacity for courage, resilience, and compassion, and this talk is an opportunity for our community to connect with a living legend and be inspired by a life dedicated to service."
Attendees will have the unique opportunity to meet Alan Playford, purchase copies of 'Through the Rubble,' and have them signed. Light refreshments will be provided at this free event, and bookings are essential.
