Cessnock City Council is pleased to advise that Orange Street in Abermain has officially reopened to traffic following significant improvement works.

Commencing in January 2024, the scope of works for the $4 million project included the reconstruction and widening of the existing road and shoulders, installation of new drainage and kerb and gutter, new signage and a new road wearing surface.

The improvements enhance road safety and infrastructure, providing a smoother, safer driving experience for all road users on the important road corridor.

Cessnock City Council General Manager Ken Liddell expressed his satisfaction with progress on the major works project, which was included in Council’s Operational Plan 2023-24 and is tracking weeks ahead of schedule.

"As the main link road to and from the Hunter Expressway via Frame Drive and Gingers Lane, we’re thrilled to see Orange Street back in use and offering improved road conditions to local residents and businesses," said Mr Liddell.

"Council’s works team have progressed the project well which has allowed us to open the road to motorists weeks ahead of schedule, while associated works are finalised.

"This is a fantastic outcome for local residents and ratepayers."

The final sections of the project includes work on a new retaining wall adjacent to the playing fields and will be finalised over coming weeks. Road users are reminded to follow all road work signage for the duration of the project, which remains on track for completion by October 2024, weather permitting.
