Background
Cessnock City Council has received funding from the NSW Government under the Get Kids Active 2025–2026 program.
Richmond Street, Kitchener is a key walking route to Kitchener Public School. The proposed connection will create safer walking and riding opportunities for families living within the village and will provide an accessible link to the new residential subdivision. This strategic pathway link is identified as a priority project in Council’s 2022–2026 Delivery Program.
The works form part of a broader long‑term pathway network plan for Kitchener. This section represents one stage of the overall strategic pathway connection, with future stages currently being progressed through design and future funding applications
Scope of Works
The project involves the construction of 365 metres of a 3m wide shared pathway, including:
- New concrete shared pathway installation
- Pram ramp connections linking the pathway to the existing bus stop infrastructure
- Installation of a bench seat, hydration station, and shade tree

Traffic Management
Traffic management plan will be in place for the duration of the works with reduced speed limits in place where needed. Signage will be displayed at to inform residents and road users of construction works.
Funding
$419,511 through Get Kids Active Program 2025-2026 and Cessnock City Council will be providing a co-contribution to the project.
