Watagan Creek Bridge Number 1

Project type: Bridge replacement
Project value: $1,800,000
Completed: September 2024

Background

This project involved replacing the aging timber bridge on Watagan Creek with a modern, single-span concrete bridge. The new bridge is designed to meet current standards, providing dual-lane access, improved flood resilience, and a safer, more durable structure. The project included raising the deck height by 1 metre, allowing for flood-free access during a 1 in 2-year flood event. The approaches to the bridge were also raised and upgraded over a 200m stretch to ensure the road's alignment and resilience.

Scope of Works

  • Construction of a single-span concrete bridge
  • Raising the bridge deck and approaches
  • Installing concrete approach slabs
  • Widening the bridge to accommodate dual-lane traffic
  • Enhanced flood resilience
  • New line marking and sealed bridge surface

Project Benefits

  • Maintenance: Reduced annual maintenance costs by 80% due to the durable concrete structure.
  • Social Impact: Improved access for all vehicles, including emergency vehicles such as fire trucks, which were previously restricted.
  • Economic Benefits: Supports local industries by allowing the transport of heavier and larger goods, facilitating economic growth.
  • Safety Improvements: The upgraded bridge offers improved safety with better load capacity, new line markings, and pedestrian access.

Watagan Creek Bridge Number 3

Project type: Bridge upgrade
Project value: $1,250,000
Completed: September 2024

Background

Watagan Creek No. 3 Bridge, a heritage timber bridge, had deteriorated significantly, leading to a 7.5-tonne load limit being imposed for safety. This load restriction impacted residents, emergency services, and goods transport. To preserve its historical value while ensuring modern functionality, the Council opted to construct a new bridge over the original structure. The project included the installation of a temporary access bridge to maintain connectivity during construction.

Scope of Works

  • Installation of a temporary access road and bridge
  • New bridge construction over the original timber bridge
  • Building new foundations, abutments, and wingwalls
  • Guardrail installation and improvements to approach roads
  • Final works including new signage and line markings
