Prepare to delve into a captivating exposé of Australia's criminal past at Cessnock Library as celebrated music industry commentator, author, and broadcaster Stuart Coupe presents his latest work: Saffron Incorporated – The First King of the Cross and Fifty Years of Sex, Murder, Music and Mayhem.

This compelling author talk and book signing, from 11am to 12pm on Saturday 29 November, promises an unflinching look at the intertwined worlds of show business and the underworld, with Abraham "Abe" Saffron at its notorious centre.

Coupe, renowned for his insightful explorations of the Australian music scene, will illuminate how nightclubs, corrupt officials, illicit substances, vice rings, rock 'n' roll promoters, dubious accountants, and gangland violence were all part of Saffron's intricate empire. Saffron, the original 'King of the Cross', laid the groundwork for over half a century of intrigue, murder, and mayhem that continues to resonate today.

Saffron's ruthless opportunism saw him quickly recognise the criminal potential within the entertainment industry. His expansion into controlling pubs and clubs, including the purchase of the Station Hotel at Kurri Kurri in 1944, foreshadowed his immense power. While not the first to blend crime with entertainment, his ascent coincided with the golden age of nightclubs, transforming him into one of Australia's most feared and influential figures.

Acting Library Services Co-ordinator Andrew Powell said Saffron’s legacy was a stark reminder of how deeply intertwined crime and entertainment could become.

"Stuart Coupe's research paints a vivid picture of this period, revealing the shadowy figures and illicit dealings that shaped Sydney's nightlife," said Mr Powell.

"This event is an unmissable opportunity for anyone fascinated by true crime and the hidden histories of our cities."

Coupe's extensive career as a music commentator, radio broadcaster, and author of notable works like Gudinski (2015) and the ABIA-shortlisted Paul Kelly, the Man, the Music and the Life In Between (2021) provides him with a unique perspective to dissect this complex subject.
