Mayoral Column _ Dan Watton

Council’s annual Christmas Appeal is in full swing – yes, I know it’s hard to believe it’s that time of year already! Four wonderful community organisations will benefit from this year’s donations drive, including Carrie’s Place, Kiray Putjung Aboriginal Corporation, Rotary Club of Cessnock, and Samaritans Information and Neighbourhood Centre Cessnock.

The festive season can be a difficult time for some in our community and I’d encourage you to consider dropping off some non-perishable food or a new and unwrapped toy to Council’s Administration Building on Vincent Street in Cessnock and leaving your donation under the Christmas tree in the customer service area by Monday 8 December.

And on the yuletide theme, don’t forget this year’s Newcastle Permanent Carols in the Park is fast approaching. It promises to be a fantastic family evening with plenty of Christmas cheer – sing-alongs, fireworks, and maybe even a visit from jolly old Saint Nick himself! Mark it in your calendar: Friday 5 December. Gates open at 5.30pm, the 14-piece band will kick off with carols 7pm before fireworks at 9pm.

Finally, I would like to welcome newly-elected councillor Deborah Dunne to the team here at Council. Clr Dunne was elected to represent Ward D following a countback of votes from last year’s local government elections after the resignation of former councillor Rosa Grine in September. I wish Clr Dunne the very best for her first term as an elected representative and I look forward to working with her as part of our team of Councillors as we continue to strive for sustainability and the delivery of high-quality outcomes for our community.
