Hunter author explores Newcastle’s evolving identity at local library

Hunter author, journalist, broadcaster, and playwright Scott Bevan will discuss his insightful new book 'Newcastle – The Lives and Times of a City' at Kurri Kurri Library from 5.30pm to 6.30pm on 28 October.
The book explores Newcastle as a city in flux – not due to geological shifts, but a profound evolution in perception. As people increasingly discover, or more accurately recognise, Newcastle for its true character, both residents and those with ties to the city are seeing it in a dynamic new light.
In his latest work, Bevan – a proud Novocastrian himself – delves into the very essence of his hometown. He meticulously traverses the city’s rich history including its early interactions with the Awabakal people, missionary Lancelot Threlkeld, its convict and industrial past, and celebrates its famous cultural figures, including those from the world of music (Silverchair), sport (the Knights), and art (William Dobell).
The narrative is brought to life through the diverse voices of dozens of locals – community leaders, champion surfers, rock stars, architects, and environmentalists. Together, these stories illuminate how Newcastle, once solely defined as 'the steel city', is now confidently embracing a new identity.
Library Services Co-ordinator Rose-marie Walters said the event at Kurri Kurri Library was a great opportunity for the community to engage with a wonderful author.
"Scott Bevan’s ability to weave together history, personal stories, and contemporary issues makes for a compelling and affectionate portrait of a city undergoing a fascinating transformation," said Ms Walters.
"He captures the evolving soul of Newcastle in a way that will resonate with everyone who calls this region home."
